The UW Carbone Cancer Center supports the Clinical Imaging Shared Facility (CISF) to facilitate the incorporation of clinical imaging into cancer clinical trials. This service is provided to help engage radiologists whenever necessary as co-investigators in these efforts. The Clinical Imaging staff coordinates this interface as a liaison between the Cancer Center and the Department of Radiology. The result of this infrastructure has increased our capacity to provide timely and accurate information related to the capabilities of imaging modalities as well as provide access to innovative imaging for UWCCC clinical trials. The UW ICTR Imaging Core Facility provides access to state-of-the-art
image acquisition, analysis tools and expertise available for clinical
and translational research.
CISF services that can be provided include:
Protocol development
- Ensure feasibility of imaging protocols within the radiology working environment.
- Link oncologists with radiologists whose specialties coincide with the proposed imaging modality.
- Organize protocol development meetings between investigators and radiologists.
Radiology Activation
- Review the requirements of individual protocols and determine the level of Clinical Imaging and radiology staff involvement.
- Participate in preparation of research budgets for radiology elements of the protocol.
- Prepare forms related to study participation involving imaging.
- Organize investigator and radiology staff meetings if appropriate.
- Attend study start up meetings.
- Provide radiology technical staff with study protocol requirements.
Coordinate US or CT image-guided biopsies
- Review scans with a radiologist to identify the location of lesions amenable to biopsy.
- Coordinate scheduling with nurses and hospital staff.
- Attend and oversee the biopsy to ensure proper specimen collection.
US, CT, MRI, PET/CT and/or other Nuclear Medicine scans
- Ensure the appropriate study requirements are met for scanning.
- Ensure images are archived in accordance with protocol.
