Biobank

The purpose the University of Wisconsin Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center (UWCCC) BioBank has been to establish for the, prospective collection and storage of residual human tissue, blood and other biospecimens that will be used in future research studies at the University of Wisconsin.

The UWCCC BioBank will serve as a centralized collection and storage service for biological material for the UWCCC and will distribute specimens to researchers according to specific policies detailed below. The BioBank will ensure that proper specimen collection, processing, storage and distribution procedures are followed and that the repository complies with confidentiality, safety and other regulatory standards.

Since the UWCCC BioBank is aimed at supporting cancer-related research at the University of Wisconsin, research studies using the specimens and the associated data will be centered around cancer biology. Proposed research may focus on but is not limited to:

  1. The biology of human cancer cells, including studies on the molecular and cellular biology of disease. These may involve studies on gene and/or protein expression patterns, interactions of the cancer cell and its environment and cell signaling, growth and death.
  1. Interactions of tumor cells with exogenous agents, including drugs, biological materials and the immune system and identification of novel agents for the treatment of human disease.
  1. Studies to identify, classify, determine prognostic features and/or best treatment outcomes in different tumors by assessing clinical information in conjunction with the biological features of the tumor tissue or other biological material.
  1. Developing of immortalized cell lines from human tissue specimens.
  1. Genetic and epidemiological aspects of disease using family history, patient clinical history, and genetic analyses.
  1. Determining the biological basis for observations and assess populations at risk for cancer.
