Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship announced at UW

MADISON— The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) has recently been approved for a Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Inc. Currently, there are less than 40 institutions in the United States training future gynecologic oncologists.

“Selection of the University of Wisconsin is a testament to our strong commitment to the highest quality cancer care, education and research,” said David Kushner, MD, director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the UW SMPH.

He added, “We have a multi-faceted infrastructure here at the UW including the latest in clinical treatments, procedures and research as well as a growing basic science program. This is quite an accomplishment, to say the least.”

Laurel Rice, MD, chair of the UW Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, adds that approval of this fellowship by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology validates the superior national standing of this division in all three areas of their mission: clinical care, teaching and research.

“Training the gynecologic oncologists of the future is a tremendous honor and commitment; it will raise the bar for all of us,” said Rice.

According to Kushner, applications for the new gynecologic oncology fellowship will be accepted this fall, with one individual selected per year for a three-year fellowship. The three-year fellowship will include a year focused solely on research and two years concentrated on clinical practice.

The University of Wisconsin Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center has the largest Gynecologic Oncology program in Wisconsin, offering patients state-of-the-art care in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancer. The team of six gynecologic oncologists, along with a multidisciplinary array of additional health care providers, sees more than 400 patients annually with common as well as rare gynecologic cancers.
