Facts and Figures

The UW Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC) is the only comprehensive cancer center in Wisconsin, as designated by the National Cancer Institute, the lead federal agency for cancer research.

In 2007, UWCCC
  • managed 90,600 outpatient clinic and radiation therapy visits,
  • cared for 2,995 inpatient admissions, and
  • treated 18,030 unique patients.

In 2006, UWCCC

  • enrolled 1,866 patients in carefully monitored clinical protocols, and
  • saw 3,892 new cancer patients with the following diagnoses:
  716 Genitourinary (Cancers of the bladder, kidney, prostate, testis)
  599 Gastrointestinal (Cancers of the colon, rectum, esophagus, liver, pancreas, and stomach)
  466 Breast
  458 Hematology (Cancers of the blood cells and lymph nodes, including leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma)
  448 Gynecologic (Cancers of the cervix, uterus, and ovary)
  406 Lung
  222 Melanoma
  198 Head and Neck
  172 Brain

UWCCC Membership
UWCCC members:
  • total more than 250 faculty from 55 departments and 9 schools
  • have access to 16 shared services and laboratories that offer cost-efficient, state-of-the-art technology for researchers

UWCCC and UW Hospital have established affiliation agreements with hospitals and cancer centers, extending the availability of our state-of-the-art cancer programs in:

Outreach Clinics
UWCCC extends its medical oncology care to outreach clinics in:

  • Beaver Dam
  • Mauston
  • Monroe
  • Portage
  • Reedsburg
  • Richland Center
and extends its radiation oncology care to outreach clinics in:
  • Antigo
  • Wausau

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Outreach
The Cancer Center offers pediatric hematology/oncology outreach programs in:

  • Appleton
  • Rockford, IL

Children’s Oncology Group (COG)
COG is a National Cancer Institute-supported clinical trials cooperative group devoted to childhood cancer research. The UWCCC extends the ability to participate in COG clinical trials to:

  • Gundersen Lutheran, La Crosse

Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG)
ECOG, through National Cancer Institute funding, conducts nationwide clinical trials in all types of cancer. The UWCCC extends the ability to participate in ECOG to:

  • Aspirus Regional Cancer Center, Wausau
  • Mercy Hospital, Janesville
  • Dean Clinic, Madison
  • Swedish American Hospital, Rockford, IL
  • Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology, Appleton
  • UW Cancer Center Johnson Creek, Johnson Creek
  • Gunderson Lutheran, La Crosse
  • UW Cancer Center Riverview Hospital, Wisconsin Rapids
  • Medical Consultants, Ltd., Milwaukee

Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG)
GOG is one of the National Cancer Institute’s funded cooperative cancer research groups devoted solely to gynecologic cancer research. The UWCCC extends the ability to participate in GOG clinical trials to:

  • Froedtert Hospital & Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee
  • Gundersen Lutheran, La Crosse

Radiation Therapy Oncology Group(RTOG)
RTOG is one of the National Cancer Institute’s funded cooperative cancer research groups devoted solely to radiation therapy research. The UWCCC extends the ability to participate in RTOG clinical trials to:

  • Aspirus Regional Cancer Center, Wausau
  • St. Elizabeth Hospital Cancer Center at Affinity’s St. Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton
  • Michael D. Wachtel Cancer Center at Affinity’s Mercy Medical Center, Oshkosh
  • UW Cancer Center Johnson Creek, Johnson Creek
  • UW Cancer Center Riverview Hospital, Wisconsin Rapids

Wisconsin Oncology Network (WON)
This regional network was established to allow community health centers to enroll patients in select cancer clinical trials that are open to the UWCCC:

  • Aspirus Regional Cancer Center, Wausau
  • Aurora Sinai Medical Center, Milwaukee
  • FHN -Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center, Freeport, Illinois
  • Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology, Appleton
  • St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center/Green Bay Oncology. Green Bay
  • Gunderson Lutheran, La Crosse
  • Mercy Hospital, Janesville
  • Holy Family Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc
  • Medical Consultants, Ltd., Milwaukee
  • Regional Cancer Center: Waukesha Memorial Hospital, Waukesha and Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital, Oconomowoc
